AI, Data & Privacy

Caution - data processed in the United States

This robot sends data to cloud servers in the United States. For EU residents, this means personal data is transferred outside the EU. While some companies use Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) or other legal mechanisms to comply with GDPR for transatlantic transfers, the data is not under direct EU jurisdiction. EU residents should review the manufacturer's Data Processing Agreement and privacy policy carefully.

How to keep it private

Needs internet
Offline

Navigation sensor data is processed entirely on-device and never sent to the cloud. However, Alexa voice features, video calling, live view streaming, and Ring integration all require cloud connectivity. With the hardware mic/camera off button pressed, Astro cannot move or capture any audio or video.

Available privacy controls

Hardware mic/camera off button

Physical button disconnects power to microphones, bezel camera, periscope camera, and navigation/depth sensors. Dedicated red LED confirms sensors are disabled.

On-device navigation processing

All navigation sensor data is processed on-device and never sent to the cloud

On-device Visual ID

Person recognition uses on-device processing to match faces. No images or video are stored in the cloud for Visual ID.

Visual ID opt-in and deletion

Visual ID enrollment is opt-in. Can be deleted anytime through Settings. Automatically deleted after 18 months of non-recognition.

Live view notification

Visual indicator warns people nearby when a live view session begins, with option for nearby people to cancel the stream

Out-of-bounds zones

Set specific areas where Astro cannot navigate or patrol

Alexa privacy controls

Auto-delete voice recordings after 3 or 18 months, or choose not to save any recordings. Delete recordings by voice command.

Privacy tip

Use the hardware mic/camera off button (red LED indicator) whenever you want guaranteed privacy. This physically disconnects all sensors and prevents movement. Set up out-of-bounds zones for private areas. In Alexa Privacy Settings, enable auto-delete of voice recordings and opt out of "Help Improve Alexa" data usage. Note that Amazon removed the local voice processing option in March 2025, so all voice requests now go through the cloud.
